Davao de Oro formerly known as Compostela Valley or its short form COMVAL is a province in the Philippines located in the Davao Region in Mindanao. The province used to be part of Davao del Norte until it was made independent in 1998.
The province was known as Compostela Valley from its inception until December 2019, after voters in a plebiscite ratified the law which changed the name of the province to its current name.
There are 11 municipalities comprising the province, which are grouped into two (2) legislative districts. District 1 is composed of Compostela, Maragusan, Monkayo, Montevista, and New Bataan. District 2 includes Laak, Mabini, Maco, Mawab, Nabunturan, and Pantukan. The province has also 237 total barangays. Nabunturan is the capital town of the province where the provincial capital is located.The agriculture sector has a significant share in the provincial economy as it has utilized 30.15 percent or 140,691.0 hectares (ha) of the total land area for the various agricultural crops, fisheries and livestock. The land area planted with major crops in the province with its corresponding annual production and average yield per hectare.
While the inventory of major poultry & livestock in the province of Davao De Oro. As of January 1, 2020, the total hog inventory in Davao Region stood at 941,256 heads. It slightly declines by 0.14 percent from the previous year’s level of 942,547 heads.The commodities from aquaculture are milkfish, tilapia, catfish, and siganid. Fishermen use brackishwater fishponds, freshwater fishcages, freshwater fish ponds, and marine fishcages.
The commodities from capture fisheries are bali sardinella (tamban), Indian mackerel (alumahan), big-eyed scad (matangbaka), anchovies (dilis), roundscad (galunggong), and fimbriated sardines (tunsoy).
Source: PSA 2019.The estimate poverty incidence among families of Davao de Oro in 2018 was at 18.6% with the annual per capita poverty threshold and annual per capita food threshold at Php 25,867.
In terms of the poverty situation in Davao de Oro, the municipality of Laak (San Vicente) has the highest poverty incidence while the municipality of Nabunturan has the lowest poverty rate.For 2018 and 2019, a total of 9,099 individuals have benefited to SAAD program equivalent to 0.67% of the province’s total population (based on 2015 PSA data). A total of 5,824 or 0.70% of the population of District I obtained interventions from the program while 3,276 or 0.65% of its population received various projects from District II. Montevista has the largest share of SAAD intervention equivalent to 3.03% of its total population followed by Laak with 2.55% and New Bataan with 2.03%.
The municipality of Compostela has an allocation of Php 4,223,700.00 for native chicken production, upgraded goat production, upland rice production and OPV white corn production for 870 beneficiaries of barangays Ngan and Panansalan.
