SOUTH COTABATO, November 12, 2024 – Aiming to enhance the technical skills and agricultural knowledge of its personnel, the Department of Agriculture – Special Area for Agricultural Development (DA-SAAD) SOCCSKSARGEN conducted a five-day Training of Trainers on Corn Production and Management at Agua Frio Garden Resort, Koronadal City last October 14-18, 2024.
The training covered essential topics on corn production, nutrient management, pest control, and sustainable farming practices, equipping participants with advanced knowledge to better support farmers across the region.
With an introduction to the fundamentals of corn production led by Agriculturist II Tracy Gail S. Salazar, the training commenced with a session on nutrient management and fertilizer computation. Salazar highlighted strategies for soil fertility optimization and underscored the importance of research and learning retention in supporting SAAD corn farmers effectively. She encouraged participants to actively disseminate this knowledge to the farmers they serve, positioning them as critical channels of technical support for the region’s agricultural communities.
Integrated Pest Management (IPM) was another core focus of the training. Science Research Specialist II Ariel D. Boreros led the sessions for this topic which covered strategies for controlling pest populations in a sustainable way, including practical, field-based techniques for identifying pests and diseases. Boreros, along with Science Research Specialist I Jennefer P. Bitoon led the hands-on field exercise in San Roque, Koronadal City, where participants identified common pests and diseases affecting corn crops, gaining firsthand experience to enhance their diagnostic abilities in the field.
Participants delved further into pest control on Day 3 with a lecture on Biological Control Agents (BCA) delivered by Science Research Specialists Josephine E. Ortiz and Princes Razel T. Dioso, followed by experiential learning activities at the BCA Propagation Lab at RCPC. This in-depth exploration introduced staff to natural pest enemies, vital for supporting eco-friendly pest control practices.
Before its conclusion, the training included sessions on corn silage production by NDA Project Veterinarian Dr. Daniel D. De Vera, as well as a hands-on workshop on organic concoction making, facilitated by Shernova Lapeña, which provided the participants with sustainable farming solutions that they can share with local farmers.
Through this intensive training, SAAD SOCCSKSARGEN gained practical tools and knowledge to foster increased agricultural productivity among corn farmers. This initiative shows its commitment to equipping its personnel with advanced skills and expertise essential for bolstering agricultural development and food security across the region. As these staff members bring their newly acquired knowledge into their work, they will play a crucial role in strengthening local corn production, ensuring that farmers are well-supported in adopting sustainable practices which could lead them to long-term agricultural success. ###
