TARLAC, November 12, 2024 — To acquire further knowledge on proper goat management and production, the Department of Agriculture – Special Area for Agricultural Development (DA-SAAD) Program of Central Luzon conducted a comprehensive training in Goat Production to 33 farmers in San Clemente, Tarlac.
Conducted last August 15, 2024, the training equipped farmers with deeper knowledge and skills in proper goat management and breeding, which is intended to become a livelihood option for the local farmers under the SAAD Program. The discussions focused on different breeds and types of goats, the necessary measurements for pregnant does, and proper care techniques.
Veterinarian I Dr. Elma Yamson-Canlas, who shared her knowledge and experience in goat management was one of the two who served as resource persons. According to her, this kind of training is significant for helping farmers improve their livelihoods and ensure the health of their animals, especially that it is their first time handling a goat as their livelihood. Practical pointers were provided on nutrition, feeding, and preventing common goat diseases, including details on choosing the right feeds and types of grass and leguminous plants suitable for goats. Chief of the Provincial Veterinary Office in Tarlac Dr. Maria Lorna Baculanta also served as resource person who provided additional insights for the farmers.
The training also included discussions on constructing proper goat pens, ensuring the right dimensions to keep the animals safe, and strategies for their growth. The farmers were actively engaged in the training, asking questions and sharing their own experiences with goat farming.
The training was spearheaded by SAAD Central Luzon Staff, Provincial Coordinator Ariel de Guzman and Area Coordinator for San Clemente Jacinto Bernardo Ongtangco. Additionally, the Local Government Unit of San Clemente (LGU) attended the same, together with their Municipal Agriculturist Ms. Delia Felix.
“Our farmers really need this kind of training, especially since this is the first time they’re receiving interventions like this from the national government. This is well-suited to support them as they begin their journey in goat farming,” said De Guzman.
The Provincial Agricultural Office of Tarlac also channels their support to the training with an aim to strengthen the agricultural sector and help farmers achieve more stable livelihoods in the province. ###
