Two-day orientation for the formulation of Banana Cluster Development Plan (CDP) empowers Balangbalang Farmers Organization

AGUSAN DEL NORTE, February 2, 2024 – In a proactive move towards the advancement of agriculture, the Balangbalang Farmers Organization (BAFO) underwent a comprehensive two-day orientation in the Formulation of the Banana Cluster Development Plan (CDP) on January 25-26, 2024, at Remedios T. Romualdez (RTR), Agusan del Norte.

A total of 21 municipalities in the region consisting of 25 clusters targeted to be assisted in CDP Preparation for fiscal year 2024 through the Department of Agriculture – Farm and Fisheries Clustering and Consolidation (DA-F2C2) Program. For its part, the DA – Special Area for Agriculture Development (SAAD) Program Phase 2 has identified BAFO through the help of the Local Government Unit as one of the pioneers for banana production in RTR. The group also aspires to become a cluster organization through said commodity, with hope of inspiring more banana growers through an inclusive approach to expand its production in the region.

Facilitated by Mr. Glenne Bryan B. Perez and Mr. Jeeboy B. Zapanta, esteemed Resource Speakers from the DA-F2C2 Program, the orientation delved into the intricate details of Cluster Development Plan Preparation. Emphasis was laid on key components such as Cluster Description, Vision Statement, Mission Statement, and Goals and Objectives, adhering to the SMART criteria (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, Time-bound).

The CDP also encompassed a comprehensive cluster summary profile and baseline data on production and other economic activities based on commodities. This data serves as the foundation for tailored interventions aimed at recognizing and addressing the specific needs of BAFO.

The orientation also conducted a Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Challenges (SWOC) Analysis within the Association. Additionally, there was a discussion on Value Chain Development Plans and an insightful orientation on the Enterprise Assessment Tool. This strategic approach aims at ensuring the sustainability of agricultural and fishery enterprises. Ms. Niña Jane A. Villagonzaga and Ms. Ligaya A. Toroy, Associate Project Officers from DA-SAAD, spearheaded these discussions.

Mr. Miguel Velasco, the SAAD Focal Person from the Provincial Agriculture Office (PAO), Agusan del Norte, addressed the vital aspect of proper handling and sanitation of farm tools. This precautionary measure is crucial to mitigate the spread of infectious diseases when transferring tools between banana trees.

This year, SAAD has earmarked Php 1,789,860 for the Banana and Egg Production Project for BAFO. This financial allocation is specifically designated to foster the growth and development of the banana and egg industry within the region.

Looking ahead, BAFO envisions itself as an established cluster and accredited distributor, not only to neighboring municipalities and cities but potentially spanning provinces and even nationwide for banana plantlets.

Expressing gratitude towards DA-SAAD, Mr. Guillermo B. Gumatay, President of Balangbalang Farmers Organization, highlighted the positive impact of the orientation. He acknowledged that the acquired knowledge, delineation of roles and responsibilities, and effective organization management were invaluable outcomes for the officers and members of the Organization.

The event drew participation from officers and staff of the Provincial Government of Agusan Del Norte, Municipal Government of RTR, Barangay Officials, and APCO-Agusan del Norte, underscoring the collaborative effort in advancing agricultural practices in the region. ###
