Lanao del Sur is a landlocked province with a total population of 1,045,429 individuals or 1,038,883 household population (PSA, 2015 census). The province voted part of the newly-constituted Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) last 2019.
It is bounded by Bukidnon on the east, Maguindanao and North Cotabato on the south, Illana Bay on west and the Province of Lanao del Norte on northwest. Lanao del Sur has a total land area of 1,337,524 hectares of which 140,111 hectares are areas of farms being utilize.
The province is divided into two congressional districts and composed of 39 municipalities and 1,159 Barangays. The Islamic City of Marawi, the province’s business center and provincial capital.
Lanao del Sur nestled in the hinterland of Mindanao at an elevation of 702 meters above sea level. The province is enclosed within the Bukidnon-Lanao highland areas. Its landscape is mainly characterized by rolling hills and valleys, placid lakes and rivers. The province occupies extensive plateau of North Central Mindanao surrounding the basin of Lake Lanao.
Having a well-suiting climate and extensively arable land Lanao del Sur is highly potential agricultural province. The province is known producer of palay, corn, coconut, sugarcane, banana and cassava. Moreover, the province also has a growing inventory of livestock such as carabao, cattle, goat, duck and chicken.
The volume of production of fisheries in Lanao del Sur posted positive growth rate of 25.84 percent (2018 vs. 2019). In terms of value of production of fisheries, Lanao del Sur posted a positive growth rate of 39.08 percent.
The major contributor is municipal fisheries followed by commercial fisheries.

Lanao del Sur is poverty-stricken province. According to PSA 2018, Lanao del Sur recorded a poverty incidence among families of 64.2% from 72.4 in 2015. It made a slight decrease of 8.2. Families in Lanao del Sur are the poorest in the entire BARMM and in the entire country.
Internal conflict aggravates the poverty situation in Lanao del Sur (Ordinario, Business Mirror 2017). Security issues are arguably one of the leading, if not the primary cause of economic backslide in the province. The recent Marawi Siege for example, ends in mass destruction and community devastation impeding social order and economy of the province.
Considering Lanao del Sur’s agricultural potential, agricultural intervention and assistance are considerable and essential mediation to improve the socio-economic situation of Lanao del Sur populace. On the very least, agricultural assistance accorded to the people in the province enable them to serve adequate foods on family table.
In terms of the poverty incidence situation in Lanao del Sur, the municipality of Tagoloan II at 78.2% has the highest poverty incidence while municipality of Wao at 45.4% has the lowest.
In 2017, SAAD Program started its implementation in the province Lanao del Sur through its implementing region, the DA Regional Office 10. While the province is outside the jurisdiction of DA 10, the province is placed under DA-SAAD 10 due to its proximity to Northern Mindanao. There were Sixteen (16) municipalities in Lanao del Sur were chosen as SAAD Program covered areas namely; Amai Manabilang, Bacolod Kalawi, Buadipuso Buntong, Butig, Calanogas, Kapatagan, Lumbaca Unayan, Madalum, Madamba, Malabang, Marantao, Marogong, Masiu, Pagayawan, Sultan Dumalondong, and Tubaran. While in 2018, another six (6) new municipalities were covered as follows, municipality of Bayang, Bubong, Kapai, Lumbatan, Marawi City and Piagapo.
In 2017, with budget allocation of Php 58.6 million the provided agricultural livelihood projects for 3,548 individual farmer beneficiaries where mostly Rice, Corn, High Value Crops, Livestock and Poultry related projects. While in 2018, additional six (6) municipalities were included provided with Php25.8 million worth of agricultural livelihood projects for 300 individual farmer beneficiaries.
