Multi-livelihood project received by 14 FAs in Cotabato

COTABATO, July 12, 2022 – Various additional farming support were provided to 819 members of 14 farmers’ associations (FAs) who are existing beneficiaries of the Department of Agriculture – Special Area for Agricultural Development (DA-SAAD) Program from June 7 to 16.

The interventions worth Php 432,700 included hybrid corn seeds, soybean meal, corn bran, duck layer feeds, knapsack sprayers, plastic drums, and garden hose distributed to the municipalities of Carmen, Kabacan, Libungan, Matalam, and Pigcawayan (Table 1).

These agri-inputs serve as free capital to improve the members’ poultry, livestock production, and livelihood of vegetable farming. The soybean meal and corn bran received by the first-in-line beneficiaries are used for animal feeding and facilitate livestock’s potential for meat and dairy production. Duck layer feeds under the mallard duck project are provided to the FAs who provided basic care to their communal poultry area.

The plastic drum is for water storage, the garden tools are for maintaining a healthy and attractive backyard garden, and the knapsack sprayer is used for spraying insecticide and pesticides on shrubs and crops. The members who are living in close proximity take turns in using these farming materials.Table 1. Various farm inputs received by 14 Cotabato FAs

The president of Capayuran Farmers Credit Cooperative, Mr. Jelito Jugas shared that, “Dako kayo ang tabang niining mga proyekto sa SAAD nga among naangkon, tungod kini nakatabang sa amoang mga panginahanglan sa uma, sa amoang pag-farm. Salamat kaayo. Busa, amoang gina-ampo nga mas daghan pa og matabangan ang programa, ilabi na sa panahon karon nga lisod kaayo ang kinabuhi, ang mga mag-uuma tuman ang kalisod nga nasinatian, maong dili makapalit og mga gamit para sa pag-panguma.”

(The SAAD projects helped us a lot in our farming endeavors. Thank you so much. That is why we are praying that there will be more program beneficiaries, especially with this economic crisis that makes the farmers’ lives extra hard, unable to buy farming tools).

The distribution was led by the Agricultural Program Coordinating Officer of Cotabato Rey M. Domingo, together with the SAAD Provincial staff and municipal staff of the 5 local government units (LGUs). ###
