To assist farmers optimize pesticide application and reduce labor costs, the Department of Agriculture – Special Area for Agricultural Development (DA-SAAD) Phase 2 Program provided 179 knapsack sprayers to 12 farmers’ associations with 300 members in Zamboanga del Sur, Zamboanga del Norte, and Zamboanga Sibugay last October 23-25.
These knapsack sprayers worth Php 737,480 in total are part of the enhanced corn, vegetable, and cacao production projects granted to the recipient FAs.
The distribution of these inputs complements previous livelihood deliveries during the second quarter of implementation, including high-quality seeds, fertilizers, farm tools, and machinery, ensuring that farmers have access to comprehensive support for their crop cultivation activities.
These sprayers will assist farmers in applying pesticides, herbicides, insecticides, and fertilizers more efficiently. By using these tools, farmers can protect their crops from pests and diseases, while ensuring proper nutrient delivery to the plants, leading to improved yields and overall farm productivity.
Additionally, farmers can enhance their crop management practices, achieve better harvests, reduce labor time, and lower production costs.
The knapsack sprayer allocation is divided among farmer groups in three provinces. In Zamboanga del Norte, the Bunawan Farmers’ Association (FA) from Godod and Dinasan FA from Jose Dalman will each receive 25 units for individual corn production, while South Mapang FA from Rizal will get 20 units for their communal corn project.
In Zamboanga del Sur, the Ebarle FA and Sebukang FA from Josefina will each receive 10 units for corn production, Lumponid Gardeners Association in Midsalip will get 17 units for communal vegetable production, and Makulip FA will receive 18 units for both corn and vegetables production.
The Poblacion Tigbao FA from Tigbao will receive 10 knapsack sprayers for their corn project, while Makugihon Organic Farming Association from San Pablo and Rizal FA from Sominot will each get 18 units, and the Rural Improvement Club from Lakewood will receive 4 units. In Zamboanga Sibugay, the Israel FA from Imelda will receive 4 units for their vegetable production.
To ensure the effective use of the equipment, the supplier conducted a briefing and orientation on October 22, 2024, at the DA’s conference room, before the official distribution to the beneficiaries.
This training covers the proper handling, maintenance, and safety measures of the knapsack sprayers, helping farmers maximize the lifespan and efficiency of the equipment. ###
