SURIGAO DEL NORTE, SEPTEMBER 11, 2024 – Months after the Department of Agriculture – Special Area for Agricultural Development (DA-SAAD) Program provided poultry livelihood interventions to Karihatag Poultry Raisers Organization (KPRO) in Barangay Karihatag, Malimono, Surigao del Norte, the farmer’s association (FA) reported Php 486,329.50 gross income from selling poultry eggs.
The 25-member group of KPRO, is one of the beneficiaries of SAAD Phase 2. They received 192 chickens in 2023 under FY 2023 and an additional 96 Ready-to-Lay (RTL) chickens on July 24, 2024, under the FY 2024 Egg Production Project worth Php 713,000.60. Chicken feeds were delivered on staggered basis between July 11-17, 2024 to prevent spoilage.
In August, they were scheduled to receive egg trays, drugs and biologics, syringes, weighing scales, water hoses, plastic drums, and additional feeds from September to November.
For poultry management, members have their consensus as to shared responsibilities in the farms such as maintaining the poultry house, ensuring a steady supply of clean water, feeding, providing vitamins, and collecting eggs.
KPRO accumulated Php 486,329.50 gross income from selling 66,949 pieces of eggs sold at Php 160 for pewee size, Php 210 for small, Php 230 for medium, Php 250 for large, Php 260 for extra-large, and Php 280 for jumbo (Table 1).

During a monitoring activity, KPRO Chairperson Edgardo Dayot, Sr. sa Brgy. Karihatag, Malimono, Surigao del Norte expressed his appreciation to the Program. “Ang Ready-to-Lay na proyekto nga nga gihatag sa programa dako jud og tabang sa among mga miyembro. Tungod niini mas napalambo among panginabuhian ug makahatag nami og dugang suporta sa pagpa eskwela sa among mga anak. Isip benepisyaryo, among paningkamutan nga magmalahutayon ang proyekto nga gihatag.”
(The Ready-to-Lay project provided by the program has been a great help to our members. Because of this, our livelihoods have improved, and we can now provide additional support for our children’s education. As beneficiaries, we will strive to ensure the project continues successfully).
Meanwhile, Municipal Agriculturist Loreta C. Loren of Malimono, Surigao del Norte, highlighted how the SAAD program has brought development and positive changes to the farmers.
“Karihatag is one of the most remote barangays in Malimono, 20 kilometers from the municipality. The support from DA-SAAD has turned that was once a distant dream into reality. We are deeply grateful to be selected as one of the program’s beneficiaries, as it has brought significant positive change to our community.”
In December 2023, each association member received a Php 2,000 share from their RTL project income. Impressed with the results, the association plans to use its savings to buy two additional sets of modules, consisting of approximately 96 RTL pullets, to increase their income further and ensure the project’s sustainability. ###
