418 Siargao, Dinagat farmers generate stable income from SAAD layer chicken projects

Four months since the establishment of Layer Chicken Projects in Surigao del Norte and Dinagat Islands, 16 farmers’ associations (FAs) from nine (9) municipalities assisted by the Department of Agriculture Caraga, Special Area for Agricultural Development (SAAD) Program accumulated Php 1,645,168.40 income from 285,736 eggs sold from August to November 2023, providing stable income sources for 418 farmers.

The layer chicken project distributed to each FA included 192 ready-to-lay pullets, a one-year supply of feeds, egg trays, drugs and biologics, and other farm inputs worth Php 583,350. Since most FAs are new to the project, they also underwent layer production and management training for effective project implementation. Table 1. *As of October 2023Mr. Manuel Antolin, President of the Active Farmers Association of Magsaysay (AFAM), said the project is now an additional income source for members mainly engaged in crop and root crop production. Like most project recipients, there was no local layer chicken project at Brgy. Magsaysay, General Luna; hence the high demand for their produce, usually getting accumulated reservations.

As of November, the group earned Php 141,857.40 from selling eggs. To maximize their income, they also engaged in a rice retailing business with a capital of 39,900 sourced from their egg sales. In December, each member received Php 4,500 for their income sharing.

According to the Philippine Statistics Authority, Caraga Region only produced 10,913 metric tons of chicken eggs by 2022, with Dinagat Islands and Surigao del Norte having the least with 68 and 30 metric tons, respectively. As such, aside from the stable income for the assisted FAs, the projects will also increase the local production in the island municipalities. ###
