SAAD provides communal egg production projects to 16 FAs in Surigao Del Norte, Dinagat Islands

CARAGA REGION, July 27, 2023 – Aiming to boost local egg production in the region, the Department of Agriculture – Special Area for Agricultural Development (DA-SAAD) Caraga Region funded communal Egg Production Projects for 16 newly-organized farmers’ groups, benefiting 420 farmers in Surigao del Norte and Dinagat Islands.

The livelihood package granted to each FA included 192 ready-to-lay pullets (4 modules), feeds (good for nine [9] months), egg trays, drugs and biologics, syringes, weighing scales, water hose, and water-plastic drums.

Poultry production and management training were also conducted from May to June to address information gaps of recipients, who are mostly new to layer chicken production. It covered topics on production, feeding, sanitation and health management, and vitamins and drug supplementation.

For FY 2023 alone, the Program allocated Php 17,430,500 for the said project. Table 1. Recipients of Egg Production Project

According to the Philippine Statistics Authority’s Chicken Situation Report (2022), PDI and SDN posted the least egg production among the provinces in Caraga, with 68 and 30 metric tons, respectively. The region produced 10,913 metric tons in the same year, ranking 12th among 16 other regions.

From July 3-7, after the FAs completed building their poultry houses, which is their counterpart, the Program distributed 3,072 head and complementary feeds to the FAs. As a communal project, members of FAs will take turns managing the projects, especially in feeding the chickens, supplementing vitamins, and collecting eggs. The chickens are expected to start laying eggs by the end of July.

Under FY 2023, 16 out of 28 or more than half of the Program’s livelihood projects are egg production projects. Results of the Beneficiary Needs Assessment revealed the need for local egg sources as an immediate food and income source, especially since most recipient groups are in the islands. ###
