ZAMBOANGA DEL NORTE, January 27, 2021- The Special Area for Agricultural Development Program of the Department of Agriculture (DA) in Region 9 delivered Php 1,399,800 worth of Layer Chicken Raising Project to 6 farmers associations (FA) in two municipalities (Rizal and Katipunan) of Zamboanga del Norte.
The 28 modules, consisting of 48 chickens each, were received by Tolda II FA (96 chickens), East Poblacion FA (144 chickens) and Sebaca FA (144 chickens) in Rizal; and Loyuran FA (336 chickens), Matam FA (240 chickens) and Mias FA (384) in Katipunan.
Area Coordinators Shelain Apolinario and Janeen Ivana Golis facilitated the delivery of the livelihood intervention, headed by Provincial Coordinator Ronillo Dusaban, and Livestock Technician Jailyn Gamutan.
Amid the pandemic
“The SAAD Program helped us a lot. With the Php 238,000 income from the first cycle, we have successfully replenished the chickens, and each of our members was given one sack of rice during the pandemic,” said Tedulo Andig, President of Matam FA.
Matam FA’s earnings were attributed to the 13 modules layer chicken given to them by SAAD in 2020.
“Our goal is not to get rich, but we want our lives to become better,” added Tedulo. “Through the support of SAAD, the DA, and the local government of Katipunan, we are closer to what we can achieve. We are very thankful to have been and we remain as farmer partners of the SAAD Program.”
On the other hand, Mias FA harvests an average of 15 trays of egg per day with 86.25% egg productivity rate. To date, Mias FA maintains 27 modules, or 1,296 layer chickens, and has Php 108,620 savings on bank.
With good standing records, these associations have been farmer partners of the SAAD Program since 2018.
In line with the “One DA” approach for the holistic transformation of agriculture and fisheries in rural communities, the DA-SAAD Program continues to deliver the promised livelihood interventions to farmers to achieve the department’s twin goals of “Masaganang Ani at Mataas Na Kita”. ###
