25 Bohol farmers equipped on livestock and poultry disease management

BOHOL, September 27, 2021 – The Department of Agriculture – Special Area for Agricultural Development (DA-SAAD) Program in Region 7 trained 25 farmers in Bohol on livestock and poultry diseases management which is essential to the beneficiaries’ farming activities.

Ten farmers from Buenavista, 6 from Getafe, 6 from Mabini, and three from Bien Unido attended the training at the Ubay Stock Farm, Ubay, Bohol from September 14 to 16.

Livestock and Poultry Disease Management Training

Representatives from the Ubay Stock Farm were the lecturers of the training. Dr. Ma. Maureen M. Manito discussed swine, poultry, and carabao production, animal health care, and antimicrobial resistance.

Dr. Estrella B. Mellomida emphasized that biosecurity is the most important measure to prevent diseases or pests on animals, like the African Swine Fever (ASF).

Science Research Specialist Jose Edu D. Escudero discussed forage and pasture management, including information on improved grasses and legumes to feed their livestock and poultry.

The training included visits to a forage and pasture area as well as goat, sheep, native chicken, and swine farms.

The farmers participated in actual farming activities such as vaccination, vitamin supplementation, and wing trimming of chickens. They also saw various abnormalities of the stocks and flocks.

A second set of beneficiaries from President Carlos P. Garcia (12 participants), Mabini (6), Bien Unido (6), Getafe (6), and Buenavista (2) participants will be trained from October 27 to 29.

SAAD Livestock and Poultry Production

Provincial Coordinator Ian H. Egam said interventions provided by SAAD were related to livestock, poultry, and crops. To promote sustainability, training programs are conducted to capacitate farmers in overseeing the overall health and status of the projects.

(Aside from this, the participants will serve as first aiders; if the animals encounter complications and need professional help, our technicians can respond and perform the procedure.)

Since 2019, SAAD Bohol has implemented the Integrated Carabao Project which has a budget allocation of Php 10,560,000 for FY 2019, Php 11,652,000 for FY 2020, and Php 11,093,610 in 2021. Each year, 300 different individuals benefited from the project.

Furthermore, the SAAD Native Chicken Project worth Php 4,690,000 was delivered to 300 individuals in 2020. ###
