The Department of Agriculture – Special Area for Agricultural Development (DA-SAAD) Western Visayas conducted a targeted Biosecurity and Risk Management in Poultry Farming Training held on August 18 and 19  2026, in Tangalan, Aklan to help prevent disease outbreaks, minimize production losses, and sustain the productivity of their native chicken-raising projects.

The two-day training interventions benefited poultry raisers from three distinct farmers associations (FA) across the barangays of Panayakan and Tagas in Tangalan.

Ivy J. Lachica, Livestock Inspector I, and Dr. Ronald R. Lorenzo, Veterinarian III, both from the Office of the Provincial Veterinarian of Aklan, served as the training resource speakers. They emphasized the importance of observing strict and proper health and sanitation protocols to safeguard poultry health and ensure the sustainability of poultry-raising activities.

“Ang importance it biosecurity is to prevent ro mga masakit nga mag sulod at the same time syempre agud mag umwad man aton it manokan. Kaya nga ginpaathagan kita ni Ma’am Ivy nga bio means life diba, security means seguridad. So, kung para kanaton, ibutang naton sa aton sarili, seguridad ka aton kabuhi. Kung ibutang naton sa aton kasapatan, seguridad sang aton kasapatan para indi sanda masudlan it masakit,” said Dr. Ronald R. Lorenzo.

[The importance of biosecurity is to prevent diseases from entering at the same time of course to develop our chicken coop. That’s why Ma’am Ivy explained to us that bio means life, security means security. So, if for us, let’s put it in ourselves, it is the security of our lives. If we put it on our animals, it is the security of our animals so that they do not get sick.]

The activity provided the native chicken growers with practical knowledge and strengthened their commitment to implementing effective biosecurity and risk management measures in their poultry operations.

Through continued learning and cooperation, the PLMPC growers are better equipped to protect their poultry, minimize production losses, and contribute to a healthier and more sustainable livestock industry in the community. ###
