The new year brings renewed hope to the Mainit Farmers’ Association (MAFA) in Perez, Quezon, as the Department of Agriculture – Special Area for Agricultural Development (SAAD) Program Phase 2 is set to provide a swine production project to the group.

For members like Razel B. Amargo of Barangay Mainit Sur, this support represents a significant opportunity to boost their income, ensure nutritious meals for their families, and build more sustainable livelihoods.

Razel, a determined mother of three and a wife, exemplifies the resilience of the agricultural community in Perez, where swine raising, coconut farming, and fishing form the backbone of the local economy. Despite facing persistent challenges and fulfilling her roles at home, Razel has proactively sought ways to contribute to her family’s well-being.

Growing up in a financially disadvantaged farming family, Razel learned the value of hard work and resourcefulness early. Though unable to complete her formal education, her commitment to her children’s academic success is unwavering – with one child graduated last year, another is in college, and her youngest is in Grade 12. Her husband, Sonny Boy Amargo, works tirelessly as a fisherman to also uphold their family.

Amid rising expenses, fluctuating incomes, and societal expectations, Razel has demonstrated remarkable initiative by engaging in various agricultural activities, including swine raising, palay trading, and selling animal feeds.

Her determination to overcome limitations is evident in her words: “Bilang isang babae at bilang isang ina, ako ay may kakayahan at may diskarte sa buhay lalo’t kung ito ay para sa aking pamilya at para sa aming kabuhayan.” [As a woman and as a mother, I am capable of being resourceful in life, especially when it’s for my family’s well-being and livelihood.]

The SAAD Program recognizes the potential of entrepreneurial farmers like Razel and actively supports their growth through targeted interventions and capacity-building initiatives. Razel’s active involvement in MAFA further underscores her commitment to improving her agricultural practices and benefiting from community support and shared learning.

As a member of MAFA, Razel eagerly participates in the association’s initiatives, recognizing the power of collective action. This year, the upcoming swine production interventions from SAAD hold particular significance for her. With her existing experience in swine raising, this support – which may include resources, training, and initial stock – offers a tangible pathway to expand her efforts and secure a more stable financial future for her family. ###
