As the Makugihong Mag-uuma sa Poblacion (MMSP) continues to expand its layer chicken enterprise, members underwent a Specialized Training on Good Animal Husbandry Practices (GAHP) for Layer Chicken Egg Production last May 28, 2026, to further enhance their skills in poultry management and ensure the sustainability of their growing livelihood project.
The training was facilitated by DA-SAAD Livestock Technician Mr. Mark Joseph Lorete, who discussed proper poultry management practices, including feeding, health management, biosecurity measures, and production monitoring. The activity provided members with additional knowledge and practical updates in poultry production as they prepare to manage more birds and expand their operations in the coming months.
Also present during the activity was Godod Municipal Agriculturist Mr. Elias Nayal, who expressed his support for the association and encouraged members to continue applying the knowledge and skills they have gained through the program.
The Makugihong Mag-uuma sa Poblacion is one of the beneficiaries of the Department of Agriculture – Special Area for Agricultural Development (DA-SAAD) Program Phase 2 in Zamboanga del Norte. Since receiving the Layer Chicken Egg Production Project in 2023, the association has demonstrated strong commitment in managing and sustaining the enterprise.
What started as a new venture for the group has grown into a reliable source of income for its members. Through continuous technical guidance from DA-SAAD and their dedication to learning, the association successfully expanded its operation beyond the initial assistance provided under the program.
At present, the group manages 37 modules of ready-to-lay (RTL) chickens, a significant increase from the original project assistance. This year, the association is set to receive an additional 10 modules, further boosting its egg production capacity and strengthening its position as one of the leading community-based egg producers in the municipality.
For association member Jomarie D. Alfeche, the training serves as a reminder that learning remains important even after years of managing the project.
“Sa una, wala gyud mi kahibalo unsaon pag-atiman sa layer chickens. Karon, naa na mi kasinatian, pero daghan gihapon mi makat-onan. Maayo gyud nga naay mga training sama ani kay naa man gyud mga bag-ong pamaagi ug mga problema nga kinahanglan mahibal-an unsaon pagsulbad,” he shared.
(At first, we really did not know how to take care of layer chickens. Now, we already have experience, but there is still much to learn. Training like this is helpful because there are always new practices and challenges that we need to learn how to address.)
For the members of MMSP, the training is another step toward achieving their goal of building a stronger and more sustainable poultry enterprise. As they prepare for the arrival of additional layer chicken modules, they remain focused on improving production, increasing earnings, and creating better opportunities for their families.
From learning the basics of poultry management in 2023 to operating a thriving layer chicken enterprise today, the association’s journey reflects how continuous learning, collective effort, and sustained support can help rural communities build lasting sources of livelihood. ###
