Across Eastern Visayas, 1,100 farmers from 55 farmers’ associations assisted under the Department of Agriculture – Special Area for Agricultural Development (SAAD) Program Phase 2 participated in a series of values formation and leadership training sessions.
Conducted throughout the month of March, training sessions conducted in 55 batches strengthened the organizational capacity of farmer groups by equipping members with essential leadership skills and instilling core Filipino values. The initiative forms part of SAAD’s continuing efforts to empower rural communities and improve livelihood opportunities.
The training covered key concepts on organizational development and leadership, including the purpose and structure of farmer associations. Participants were also oriented on fundamental values such as integrity, cooperation, and accountability, which are vital in building strong and sustainable associations.
In addition, discussions focused on the roles, rights, and responsibilities of members, as well as leadership and decision-making processes. Topics on group management, effective communication, and conflict resolution were also tackled to help farmers address common organizational challenges.
Participants engaged in various interactive and practical activities throughout the training. One of the highlights was identifying the qualities of a good leader, where farmers shared insights based on their experiences within their respective associations.
A vision-mission workshop was also conducted, allowing each farmers’ association to develop or refine their organizational goals and direction. This activity encouraged members to align their objectives and work collectively toward shared aspirations.
The training was facilitated by the Regional and Provincial Program Management Support Offices (R/PPMSOs), in partnership with local government units and other government agencies.
According to SAAD Social Preparation and Program Management (SPPM) Lead Zita Myla S. Bajar, “the initiative seeks to develop values-driven leaders and responsible members who can effectively manage their organization. Strengthening teamwork and leadership skills is seen as a key factor in ensuring the long-term success of community-based enterprises.”
Through the training, farmer groups are expected to become more organized, proactive, and capable of addressing challenges within their group and the communities they belong to. Moreover, the knowledge and skills gained are anticipated to enhance their ability to sustain agricultural projects and improve productivity. ###
