The Department of Agriculture’s Special Area for Agricultural Development (DA-SAAD) Program Phase 2 conducted a Training on Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) for vegetables and corn last June 25–26, 2025. The training was attended by members of the Bayanihan Makugihong Mag-uuma ug Mangingisda Association (BMMMA) in Brgy. Bayanihan, Libjo.
The activity strengthened the farmers’ knowledge on producing safe and high-quality vegetables and corn. Topics included land preparation, use of quality seeds, and proper planting techniques to improve harvest and crop health.
Mr. Ryan C. Bucabal, Agriculturist I from the Department of Agriculture, served as the resource speaker. He emphasized the responsible use of fertilizers and pesticides, focusing on safe application, correct timing, and protective measures to reduce health and environmental risks. He also encouraged the use of organic farm inputs and the adoption of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) techniques.
Other key topics included water and waste management, proper farm hygiene, and the importance of recordkeeping to monitor farm activities and maintain produce quality.
BMMMA Vice Chairperson Antonio A. Sambayon expressed his appreciation for the training, sharing: “Dako akong pasalamat sa programa nga daghan gihapon mi nakat-onan sa pamaagi sa pagpanguma, pagkat-on sa hapsay ug ensaktong pag-harvest ug pagtipig sa ensaktong butangan ang mga abono ug pestisidyo, apil ang pagdasig sa paggamit og mga organikong abono ug pestisidyo aron luwas ug di makadaot sa panglawas.”
(I am very thankful for the program because we learned a lot about proper farming methods, including safe harvesting and storage, correct handling of fertilizers and pesticides, and the use of organic inputs to protect our health.)
Through its continuous training and support services, the SAAD Program aims to ensure the sustainability of its livelihood projects. It promotes GAP compliance and proper post-harvest handling to help farmers meet market standards and provide safe, high-quality food to consumers.
