In support of the goal of the Department of Agriculture Region 02 to boost livestock production in the region, the Special Area for Agricultural Development (SAAD) Cagayan Valley conducted a training on Cattle Production for the farmer-members of the Malaueg Food Producers and Farmers Association and Masi Corn Development and Farmers Association in Rizal, Cagayan, last August 19, 2026.

Members actively participated in the discussion led by Dr. Adrian Ramos. Topics included cattle breeding highlighting how it improves yields and boosts the food supply as well as health management, selection and culling, and feeding management.

As the discussion continued, Dr. Ramos explained Artificial Insemination (AI), covering its advantages, disadvantages, and the requirements for successful implementation. To promote better herd management, he also tackled common cattle diseases, their symptoms, and possible treatments.

These topics were selected to emphasize that proper nutrition is one of the most critical factors affecting the overall productivity of a cow herd. Inadequate nutrition results in a poor calf crop, lighter calves, and subsequent poor reproductive performance.

Meanwhile, Ms. Frances Cabaddu, the association’s Treasurer, shared her insights from the training and commended Dr. Ramos for his informative session.

“In our training regarding Cattle Production, I learned a lot about how to properly care for cattle, including the types of grass or feed suitable for their daily consumption. I also learned the right timing for artificial insemination. The speaker discussed various infections with their symptoms and treatments, giving us valuable knowledge on how to manage our livestock more productively,” she explained.

This training will extend beyond the two participating associations, as members are committed to sharing these technical learnings with other livestock raisers within their local community. ###
