To improve goat raising, increase production and income, and meet market and consumer needs, the Department of Agriculture – Special Area for Agricultural Development (DA-SAAD) Central Visayas distributed 70 goats worth Php 832,230 to two farmer associations on June 25, 2025.

The Dawis Farmers Association (DAFA) in Brgy. San Sebastian, Samboan, Cebu, and the Lawaan Farmers Association in Brgy. Lawaan, Alcantara, Cebu each received seven (7) goat packages. Each package included four young female goats (doelings) and one young male goat (buckling). This was the second batch of goat distribution, given to another seven (7) members from each association, out of their 30 total members.

The activity was carried out in partnership with the Local Government Units (LGUs) of Samboan and Alcantara, through their respective Agriculture Offices, which helped facilitate the delivery and distribution of the goats.

The distribution of goat packages is part of the Goat Production with Marketing and Enterprise project. This support aims to help farmers start their goat-raising activities and build sustainable livestock enterprises.

The association aims to increase the local supply of goats as part of their plan to earn income through livestock sales. To achieve this, they plan to apply proper management practices to make the most of available resources. Members also received training from the SAAD Program to improve their skills in managing the project.

Under the agreement, each member who receives goats from SAAD must pass on five weaned goats (one buck and four does), at six months old regardless of weight, to another interested member of the association.

In addition, all profits from goat production will be deposited into the association’s savings account, following a set percentage sharing. This system helps ensure the sustainability of the project, promotes responsible use of resources, and secures funds for future activities.

Adelyn Cavalida, treasurer of DAFA, shared her appreciation for the support they received.

“Ang akong nadawat lima ka kanding, usa ka butu ug upat ka baye. Dako kaayo ang matabang ani sa akong pamilya ug para sa akong mga anak nga nag-eskwela. Unya para pud sa asosasyon nga makahatag mi aron makadawat sab ang magpa miyembro sa among organisasyon. Ug akong pasalamatan og dako ang DA sa Region 7, labi na ang SAAD.”

(I have received 5 goats, 1 male and 4 female. This will be a great help to my family, especially to my children as I will now be able to fund for their education. Additionally, we can also contribute and share these goats for those who are willing to become members of our association. Thus, I would like to extend my gratitude to the DA in Region 7, especially the SAAD Program.)

Veterinary support and regular monitoring will also be provided to keep the animals healthy and ensure the success of the project.
