Cagayan
Cagayan is a province in the northernmost part of Luzon, Philippines, known for its rich cultural heritage, vast agricultural lands, and coastal resources. It is part of the Cagayan Valley region (Region II) and has Tuguegarao City as its capital. The province covers an area of approximately 9,295.75 square kilometers, making it one of the largest provinces in the country. It consists of 28 municipalities and one city, with a population of around 1.2 million people (2020 Census).
The economy of Cagayan is primarily driven by agriculture, fisheries, and trade. The province is a major producer of rice, corn, tobacco, and peanuts, and it also has a thriving livestock industry. Its coastal and inland waters support a significant fisheries sector, providing employment and food security for many communities. The Cagayan River, the longest river in the Philippines, plays a crucial role in irrigation and transportation.
Cagayan is also rich in natural attractions and historical landmarks. The Callao Caves in Peñablanca, the Palaui Island in Sta. Ana, and the Aparri Delta are among the province’s key tourism sites. The Cagayan Economic Zone Authority (CEZA) in Sta. Ana is an emerging hub for business and investment, particularly in shipping, tourism, and gaming industries.
Despite its economic strengths, Cagayan faces challenges such as natural disasters, particularly typhoons and floods, due to its geographical location. However, efforts in disaster preparedness, infrastructure development, and economic diversification continue to drive the province’s growth. With its rich resources and strategic location, Cagayan remains a vital region in Northern Luzon’s development.
Agricultural Sector
Cagayan Province maintains a robust agricultural sector that significantly contributes to regional and national food security. The province is a major supplier of various agricultural products, including rice, corn, vegetables, sugar, mango, cassava, banana, cacao, coffee, tubers, and watermelon. These diverse crops underscore Cagayan’s vital role in supplying food to the National Capital Region and other parts of the country.
Fisheries Sector
Cagayan Province boasts extensive marine and inland water resources, positioning it favorably for a thriving fisheries sector. The province’s deep seas are home to a variety of species, including tuna, hairtail, snapper, scad, slipmouth, mullet, grouper, shrimp, squid, and lobsters. Despite this rich marine biodiversity, deep-sea fishing remains underdeveloped, leading to concerns about foreign poachers exploiting these resources.
Poverty Situation
As of the first half of 2023, the Cagayan Valley region, which includes Cagayan Province, has experienced a notable decline in poverty incidence. The poverty rate decreased significantly from previous years, contributing to the overall national reduction in poverty levels
