The Kaagapay Organization in the municipality of Concepcion on Sibale Island earned Php 109,169 from their first broiler production cycle, a project under the Special Area for Agricultural Development (SAAD) Program Phase 2 aimed at boosting local poultry supply and providing livelihood opportunities.
Located at Brgy. Calabasahan, the group sold a total of 581 kilograms (kgs) of chicken after receiving its first batch of 400 Cobb chicks on October 22. Members took turns feeding, cleaning, and monitoring the chickens in their communal area.
This included 458.9kg of dressed chicken at Php190/kg, 80.05kg of live chicken at Php 180/kg, 27.5kg of chicken feet and heads at Php 150/kg, and 15.2kg of liver and gizzard at Php220/kg. Buyers came from their barangay and nearby communities, with several customers placing advance orders.
After deducting Php 5,394 in production expenses, the group earned a net income of Php 103,775.
Association President Quiarra M. Fabroa described their broiler project as a source of renewed hope for their group. Since 2023, they have been planting root crops, but flooding and poor soil conditions on their previous communal farm led to low yields. They later moved to a hilly area, where they now cultivate ginger, while also managing their broiler project.
[We are deeply grateful to the SAAD Program for entrusting us not only with crops but also with broiler production. We see that it will have a positive outcome, and we promise to expand and grow our broiler project to achieve a sustainable livelihood.]
Municipal Agriculture Officer Micah F. Matucad said the project has already started to contribute to the town’s chicken supply.
[They are now contributing to the supply of chicken here in Concepcion. The volume of chicken imported from Oriental Mindoro has also decreased because of the project provided by SAAD. We are very grateful because SAAD has given Kaagapay a source of livelihood that will help them grow and earn their own income.]
Mayor Nicon F. Fameronag added that the initiative supports the municipality’s drive for food security through the Sibale Sustainable Integrated Bio-Agriculture as Livelihood and Enterprise Food Security Program (SIBALE FSP).
[Having an additional business through broiler production will further strengthen our initiative to achieve food security as soon as possible, which is the main goal of our Sibale Sustainable Integrated Bio-Agriculture as Livelihood and Enterprise Food Security Program. We sincerely thank SAAD for your efforts to help small municipalities like Sibale become food secure soon.]
In addition to the broiler project of the Kaagapay Organization, DA-SAAD MIMAROPA also implemented other poultry initiatives in Concepcion. This included a Ready-to-Lay Chicken (Egg) Production Project with the Samahang Manggagawa ng Sampong in Brgy. Sampong, and a Free-range Chicken Production Project with the Tabok Farmers Organization in Brgy. Poblacion. These interventions aimed to diversify local poultry supply and provide additional livelihood opportunities on the island.
