“Eggs are gold.”
This is how Gaudioso C. Tabaranza, chairperson of the Diversified Farmers Association of Sabangan (DIFAS) in San Isidro, Davao del Norte, described the growing impact of their poultry egg production. A livelihood project that has transformed the lives of farmers in their association.
Through the support from the Department of Agriculture – Special Area for Agricultural Development (DA-SAAD) Program Phase 2, their poultry egg production has rapidly emerged as a dependable source of income, food security, and empowerment for the community.
“What started as a small flock has now grown into a thriving enterprise. We now collect eggs every morning, and they sell really fast,” Tabaranza shared.
Eggs, rich in protein, vitamins, and minerals, have become a staple in every household, making them an ideal product for both consumption and commerce.
For this year, the association received a total project grant worth ₱1.35 million from DA-SAAD. Of this, ₱1.24 million was allocated for Food Production and Livelihood support, ₱875,000 for Social Preparation, and ₱375,000 for Marketing Assistance and Enterprise Development (MAED).
The group received 724 upgraded native chickens and 90 sacks of feeds under their Native Chicken Production component.
Today, the association produces over 200 eggs per day sold at P220 per tray, with the strong and consistent demand from nearby communities for fresh, locally sourced eggs. For Mr. Tabaranza, raising chickens has become more than just a daily routine, but a viable and sustainable livelihood.
Since the livelihood project began, the DIFAS has been earning an average of ₱20,000 monthly, totaling over ₱240,000 in income to date.
Alongside this, they were given access to training on capacity development, specialized training including MAED training.
The chickens started laying regularly after proper care and feeding. According to the association, they learned a lot from the trainings and hands-on support.
To help diversify their income, the association was also entrusted with 20 upgraded goats, hybrid corn seeds, and fertilizer for their corn production, solidifying their commitment to integrated farming.
“We’ve worked hard to maximize the assistance provided by SAAD. As proof of our dedication, we now have ₱60,000 saved in the bank to ensure the continuity and sustainability of our project,” said Tabaranza.
What began as a modest venture is now a growing agricultural success story.###
