A farmer group from Misamis Occidental, supported under the Department of Agriculture – Special Area for Agricultural Development (DA-SAAD) Program, showcased their products during the celebration of the 17th Dagaton Festival 2026 in the municipality of Baliangao.
As part of the celebration, an Agro-Trade Fair was held last July 10, 2026. The Punta Sulong SAAD Phase 2 Farmers’ Association (PSSPFA), a SAAD-established farmers’ association from Barangay Punta Sulong, Baliangao town, set up a booth featuring a variety of local products.
They sold fresh eggs, a staple product from their poultry initiative under the SAAD Program’s Integrated Poultry and High-Value Crops Production Project, alongside beautifully handcrafted nito and shell crafts. These included key holders, chimes, mirrors, hats, bags, baskets, plates, and ashtrays – each piece demonstrating local artistry and sustainable practices.
The association’s venture into craft-making began in June 2026, as members explored the abundant natural materials available in their surroundings. Nito, a climbing fern commonly found growing on trees and rocks, has long been part of the community’s livelihoods.
Recognizing their potential, PSSPFA members started incorporating nito and seashells into handcrafted items, transforming simple materials into functional and decorative products that showcase the association’s resourcefulness and artistic talent.
Their efforts caught the attention of Baliangao Mayor Golda Catherine June-Yap Resma, who personally visited their booth during the event. The municipal mayor purchased several items and featured the association in her vlog, helping to boost the group’s visibility and market reach.
The association generated a total income of Php 4,255 from their sales during the agro-trade fair.
PSSPFA’s participation in the Agro-Trade Fair not only provided a platform to showcase their products, but also served as an opportunity to promote the potential of community-based enterprises rooted in local resources. With ongoing support from the SAAD Program, the association continues to develop their craft-making skills and explore new avenues for income generation. ###
