For Ms. Precy R. Dumaraos, a dedicated member of the Green Thumb Laguna Farmer’s Association (GTLFA) and an entrepreneur in Pakil, Laguna, the ongoing support of the Special Area for Agricultural Development (SAAD) Program Phase 2 holds a significant promise in strengthening her agricultural livelihood.
The 42-year-old and her fellow GTLFA members are currently participating in the integrated carabao and vegetable production project. This project, stemming from a prior community assessment, marks an anticipated positive development for farmers like Ms. Dumaraos, although income generation is yet to commence as the group is in the initial stages of implementation.
Her journey towards establishing a sustainable livelihood in agriculture began over a decade ago. As a mother of two, she initially assisted her in-laws on their farm. When her family faced economic hardship due to her husband’s job loss, they turned to full-time farming, cultivating essential high-value crops such as tomatoes, string beans, and bitter gourd.
Despite enduring numerous challenges, including the constant threat of typhoons to her crops and livelihood, Ms. Dumaraos has consistently demonstrated unwavering perseverance.
Reflecting on her experiences, she shared: “Hindi naman kapag sinabing pagsasaka, mahirap lang. May pagkakataon na kikita ka naman talaga. Sa katunayan, itong tindahan ko ay katas ng kamatis at nakabili kami ng sasakyan para makatulong sa aming kabuhayan. Yung ibang inaani namin, dito ko na rin binibenta.”
[Farming isn’t always just about hardship. There are times when you can truly earn from it. In fact, I was able to build this vegetable stall from our tomato harvest, and we even bought a vehicle to support our business. I also sell some of our other harvests here.]
Driven by her entrepreneurial spirit, Ms. Dumaraos established a small but vital vegetable stand in Brgy. Laguan, Pakil. This has provided a crucial additional income stream for her family. Her proactive approach to securing her livelihood is further evident in her strategic diversification of crops, including cucumbers, bitter gourds, eggplants, and papayas. This smart planning has helped mitigate risks associated with unpredictable weather, leading to a more stable income.
Beyond her vegetable farming endeavors, Ms. Dumaraos has also capitalized on opportunities like the local government’s native pig project, further diversifying her agricultural activities and contributing to her family’s financial well-being.
Inspired by her deep love for her family, Ms. Dumaraos embodies the strength and capability she believes all women possess.
As she stated previously, “Bilang babae, lahat kaya nating gawin. Maging nanay, maging ang mga gawain sa bahay, at kahit po ang maghanapbuhay. Kahit tayo ay nahihirapan ay kaya nating tumayo at maging matatag sa hamon ng buhay.”
[As women, we can do anything—be mothers, manage household tasks, and even earn a living. No matter how tough life gets, we have the strength to stand tall and face its challenges.]
Her active involvement as the treasurer of GTLFA demonstrates her ongoing commitment to her community and her willingness to support the growth and success of fellow farmers. Now, Ms. Dumaraos remains optimistic about the continued positive impact of her association with GTLFA and the sustained support from the SAAD Program. ###
