Farmers’ associations (FAs) in Abra have started their swine production projects under the Department of Agriculture’s Special Area for Agricultural Development (DA-SAAD) Program Phase 2 in the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR).

Among all the 50 farmer groups under the Program in Abra, three associations are beneficiaries for the swine production project, namely; Brgy. Amti Farmers Association in Amti, Boliney; Tamasu Dynamic Farmers Association in Kilong-Olao, Boliney; and Sitio Ol-olingen Lap-lapog Agriculture and Fisheries Association in Lap-lapog, Villaviciosa.

Each association received six piglets, eight sacks (50 kgs each) of hog starter feeds, and a housing unit, respectively. The piglets and feeds were delivered within the first two weeks of February 2025.

Most housing units were built last year, except for the Brgy. Amti Farmers Association, whose unit will be constructed this year. Additional supplies such as feeds on grower, gestating, and lactating, as well as dewormers and vitamins, will be delivered this year. The total support provided, including training, amounts to Php 2,397,360.

Salamat po sa SAAD sa first project na binigay ninyo sa amin, matataba na po ang aming mga piglets, hopefully matulungan niyo pa po kami and praying forward na maging successful po itong project,” said Petra L. Bacuyag, president of Tamasu Dynamic Farmers Association.

(We are grateful to SAAD for providing us with this first project. The piglets are now growing well. We hope for your continued support and we pray for the success of this project.)

To further help them succeed, all farmer-beneficiaries completed training through the Farmers Livestock School (FLS) on Swine Production in 2024. This training equipped them with the necessary skills and knowledge to manage and sustain a profitable livelihood on swine raising.

This initiative under DA-SAAD CAR directly benefits marginalized farmers, providing them with resources and knowledge to improve their livelihood. It also supports the government’s swine repopulation program, helping increase the local pig supply and stabilize pork prices in the region. ###
