Former insurgents become mushroom growers in Bukidnon

December 20, 2021

BUKIDNON, December 20, 2021 – The Department of Agriculture (DA) Northern Mindanao (Region 10) through its Special Area for Agricultural Development (SAAD) Program conducted Mushroom Spawn Production Training to former rebels from Quezon, Bukidnon to turn them into mushroom growers.

The training worth Php 43,550 was conducted from December 2 to 3 to support the Executive Order No. 70 or the “Institutionalizing the whole-of-nation approach in attaining inclusive and sustainable peace, creating a national task force to end local communist armed conflict, and directing the adoption of a national peace framework”.

Headed by Regional Executive Director Carlene C. Collado, 17 members of Lumintao Farmer’s Association were upskilled on growing mushroom spawn (Pleurotus ostreatus) using raw materials.

Facilitated by the DA’s Research Center for Upland Development (RCUD), the beneficiaries were assisted by the 3rd Infantry Battalion (3IB) of the Philippine Army, headed by Lt. Col. Juvenal Mark T. Tayamen.

The mushroom spawns, which were provided by the 3rd Infantry Battalion (3IB), were immediately grown in the group’s 200-square meter communal farm.

With the concerted efforts of the DA-SAAD and 3IB, the former insurgents now have solid knowledge on mushroom’s properties and benefits, farm management, cultivation, processing, and marketing. ###
