Tausug farmers benefit from Cassava-Corn-Peanut Farming and Egg Production Projects

SULU, August 1-5, 2020 – Tausug farmers in Jolo received 300 bags of organic fertilizers for the Cassava-Corn-Peanut Farming Project and 60 sets of fabricated cages for the Egg Production Project from the Department of Agriculture (DA) – Special Area for Agricultural Development (SAAD) Region IX- Sulu.

The delivery of interventions was made possible with the assistance of SAAD Area Coordinators (ACs), in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Agrarian Reform Sulu (MAFAR-Sulu).

The organic fertilizers worth Php 480 per bag were distributed to 38 beneficiaries from barangays Kanbulak, Kanmindus, and Tanduh Batu in the municipality of Luuk and barangays Pasil and Bangalan in the municipality of Indanan.

The remaining inputs such as hog wire, barbed wire, cassava stalks, corn seeds, unshelled peanut, and other farm tools are expected to be delivered in the last week of August 2020. The FY 2020 Cassava-Corn-Peanut Farming Project with backyard gardening, which has a total project cost of Php 6,136,240.00, benefits a total of 137 farmers from 6 municipalities (Parang, Maimbung, Talipao, Panamao, Indanan and Luuk).

On the other hand, the fabricated cages were assembled in the municipalities of Talipao, Maimbung, Parang, and Panamao. The municipalities will receive 15 modules each, wherein a module costs Php 60,000.00. The cages are part of the FY 2020 Egg Production Project with a total cost of Php 3,600,000.00 and will benefit 180 individual farmers. The installation of cages is expected to be completed before the arrival of 2,880 ready-to-lay chickens in the last week of August 2020.

Aside from personal consumption, the implementation of the projects will also generate employment and income for the locals of Sulu.

The DA-SAAD IX is committed to deliver and distribute all livelihood projects under SAAD FY 2020 within the 3rd quarter amid the crisis caused by COVID-19 pandemic. ###
