The Department of Agriculture – Special Area for Agricultural Development (DA-SAAD) Western Visayas conducted a targeted Biosecurity Protocols and Risk Management Training from May 19 to 21, 2026, to help prevent disease outbreaks and reduce livestock mortality.
The three-day training interventions benefited 155 poultry raisers from three distinct farmers associations (FA) across the barangays of Poblacion and Guinhulacan in Bingawan.
Dr. Pacifico Lumauag, Veterinarian III from the Regulatory Division of DA, served as the Training Resource Speaker. He highlighted the significance of observing strict and proper health and sanitary protocols to safeguard and sustain poultry production projects.
He further emphasized that biosecurity is the first and most cost-effective line of defense against devastating animal diseases, such as Avian Influenza and Newcastle Disease, which can instantly wipe out a livelihood venture if left unchecked.
“Prevention is far less effective than cure, especially in poultry farming,” Dr. Lumauag stressed.
“By implementing strict quarantine measures, controlled farm access, and regular disinfection, our farmers can protect their investments, guarantee animal welfare, and secure a steady income for their families,” he added.
The comprehensive training mixed technical lectures with practical, actionable farm strategies tailored for small-scale community enterprises. Key areas covered during the training included isolation and quarantine controls, sanitation and disinfection, and early risk detection.
This activity is relevant to the current needs of the FAs as they manage and sustain their livelihood on native chicken production. Armed with this new learning, the members of Poblacion and Guinhulacan are now better equipped to transform their backyard poultry operations into highly-resilient, biosecure, and sustainable agribusinesses capable of supplying safe poultry products to the municipality of Bingawan and neighboring markets. ###
