Northern Samar is a province included in the Eastern Visayas Region which lies on the northern area of the Samar Island thus its name. Its total land area is 369,293 ha, bounded by the San Bernandino Stait (north), Pacific Ocean (east), Samar Sea (west) and Samar (south). The people of Northern Samar (previously called Ibabaonon) sum up a total population of 632,379 based on the 2015 Census of Population (PopCen) and a Poverty Incidence rate (per Family) of 43.5 as per the 2012 survey of Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) thus making it one among the priority provinces of the Special Area for Agricultural Development Program for 2017.


Northern Samar has 24 towns which comprise a total of 569 registered barangays. Its capital is the town of Catarman which serves as the seat of the provincial government and the centre of economic activities. The natives of the said province use Ninorte Samarnon, a variation of Waray-waray, as their dominant dialect spoken next to Cebuano and Inakbaknon. The area is also renowned for having rich and fertile soil which can grow almost every crop.
